Lily Allen's New Reason to Smile: Pregnancy

by Gina Serpe

So much for that sudden weight loss.

While Stateside gossipmongers may still be abuzz with news of Jamie Lynn Spears' expectancy, entertainment watchers across the pond have a surprise starlet pregnancy of their own to talk about: Lily Allen's.

A rep for the 22-year-old "Smile" singer has confirmed she is expecting her first child with 37-year-old musician Ed Simons, one half of electronic dance duo the Chemical Brothers. As it is, the stork wasted no time in RSVPing the happy couple—the duo has only been dating since September.

"I am pleased to confirm that Lily Allen and her boyfriend, Ed Simons, are expecting their first child," the songbird's rep said in a statement Wednesday. "However, as the pregnancy is at a very, very early stage, the couple ask that you respect their privacy, as the health of Lily and their child is their paramount concern." ....

Just last month, the Alright, Still popster, who recently earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, announced she had been diagnosed with a heart murmur over the summer, a condition that, apart from the shock of the diagnosis, appears relatively harmless.

Allen issued the medical memo after U.S. and U.K. publications began noticing the singer's vastly slimmed down physique and picked up on her seeming sudden adherence to the cookie-cutter starlet mold.

The singer, however, took care to stress that her new designer-friendly figure was the result of a better overall health regime and not born from a desire to "become some skinny minnie—I will never be like that."

Particularly not for the next nine months.

Despite the burgeoning bun in the oven, Allen's rep said the singer has no plans to pull out of any upcoming professional commitments, chief among them finishing up her highly anticipated sophomore album.

The as-yet untitled record release will go ahead as planned in spring 2008, with Allen due back in the studio in the new year to put the finishing touches on the album. Allen will also forge ahead on a chat show she's set to host for BBC Three, Lily Allen and Friends, which will revolve around topics of the day as spun by the singer and a bevy of her MySpace pals, of which there are, famously, no shortage.

A spokesperson for the BBC said they "have heard the news and we are thrilled for her."

While Allen has long said she only wants to make one more album before retiring from the music biz altogether—time and contracts will tell if that remains the case—she has only recently started talking about starting a family of her own.

"It's a great job, but it doesn't leave time for what's important," she told Britain's Sunday Times last month. "Like having a family."

"I'd like to live in the country and have a walled garden, and chickens and pigs."

While the pregnancy may allow her to step out of the limelight and pursue the lifestyle she wants, it might also give her the final push to exorcise one of her remaining demons.

"I should also give up smoking," she said last month, "but haven't quite managed that yet."

Kate Moss Snapped Topless With Mystery Man

Kate Moss was recently snapped sunbathing topless with a new male pal while enjoying a vacation in Cancun Mexico. The 33-year-old supermodel who had been dating Jamie Hince, was spotted at the Esencia hotel soaking up the sun while on a sunbed topless. Kate Moss was taking a break at the $900 a night hotel from a photoshoot for the British fashion chain Topshop. An onlooker said: "They were very playful, touchy feely and seemed to be having a lot of fun."

This is the second time in recent months that Kate Moss has been spotted enjoying the warm weather without Jamie who prefers strolls in the country rather than beaches.

Any guesses on who the mystery man is?

Pamela Anderson's marriage to Rick hits a rocky patch

The two-month marriage between former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson and her husband Rick Salomon is reported to be in difficulties, although according to an entry in the glamorous celebrity's website the pair are "working things out".

The blonde beauty apparently separated from 39-year-old Rick last Thursday and then filed for divorce the next day, citing irreconcilable differences. By Monday, however, the situation seemed to have calmed down, with the couple spotted out shopping together in their Malibu hometown. Pamela then posted a message on her blog indicating the couple were smoothing things over.... ?

British Columbia-born Pam wed her some-time actor and producer beau on October 6 in Las Vegas during a brief break between shows with onstage magician Hans Klok, for whom she has been acting as an assistant.

Although she's been invited to appear in another lavish spectacular in the casino town since the magic show ended, the Canadian mum-of-two says she has no plans to return to the spotlight just yet. Instead, she's planning to focus on family life.

"I'll do a few stage appearances soon, to fulfil the exhibitionist in me, but committing to years in Vegas is not going to work for my family," says the 40-year-old, adding: "I'm going to work on my dream now and stay home!".

jessica Simpson Goes Public With Romo Romance

Pop star Jessica Simpson has made her romance with American football star Tony Romo public - after showing up at the Dallas Cowboys' Sunday game wearing a miniature version of his jersey.

Donning a white jersey emblazoned with Romo's number nine, Simpson cheered on her new love from the stands - but her presence failed to help the quarterback's side to victory, and the Texas team lost 6-10 to the Philadelphia Eagles.

And the backlash from hardcore Cowboys fans appears to have already started - local newspaper the Dallas Morning News claims Romo was verbally attacked as he left the arena, with one female fan shouting, "Worry about the game, not your girlfriend!"

`Zoey 101' and Its Star Reach Crossroads

By JOHN ROGERS
(AP) - One of TV's favorite schoolgirls is starting to grapple with some growing pains, and so is her real-life counterpart, 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears, sister of that other Spears.

"Zoey 101" wraps up its third season as one of the Nickelodeon's top-rated shows with a Jan. 4 cliffhanger worthy of the recent "Desperate Housewives" show, in which a tornado struck Wisteria Lane.

Nobody's life is on the line in a kid's show, of course. But tweens will have to fret along with Zoey over whether she should remain at her sun-dappled California boarding school, Pacific Coast Academy, or move to London with her parents....

If Zoey stays, she may finally learn that best friend Chase (Sean Flynn) has had a serious case of puppy love for her since that day three years ago when she arrived on campus and he was so smitten he rode his bicycle straight into a pole.

So what will she do as the show's third season ends and her school chums ponder a fourth season without Zoey?

"I don't know. I don't know," Spears says teasingly during a phone interview from her home in Kentwood, La.

"Something definitely happens," she finally concedes. "But I guess you'll just have to wait and see what comes of it all."

Zoey's dilemma is not altogether unlike Spears' own, as the actress, now a high school junior, ponders her future.

"I'm going to try to graduate before I do anything else," she says of taking on another TV series or future film roles after "Zoey 101" ends.

Rumors are rampant among "Zoey" fans that her character and Flynn's will finally hook up in season four. There will be a lot of getting together of various characters on the show, Spears says, but she won't reveal Zoey and Chase's situation.

She's more open about her own situation, saying she has no serious boyfriend.

"I kind of just keep my options open," she says. "I have a bunch of friends that I always hang out with, a bunch of guy friends."

She declines to discuss her famous sister, Britney, although she says she has no plans to follow her to California.

"No! Never will," Spears says, laughing at the idea of living in Los Angeles. But her reluctance, she quickly adds, doesn't have as much to do with avoiding the paparazzi as it does with leaving Louisiana.

"It's, you know, it's my friends," she says. "It's where I grew up. I want to stay here."

For years she has turned over the idea of attending Louisiana State University.

"I haven't thought anything about what I might study," she says, chuckling. "I'll have to look more into that. But if I went anywhere, I think it would be fun to go to LSU."

Not that California hasn't been a nice place to fly in and out of, particularly during the show's first two seasons, when it was filmed at Malibu's Pepperdine University.

The seaside campus is famous for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. And even after filming moved inland to allow "Zoey 101" to stay in production while classes were in session, the show's producers managed to work stock shots of the campus into every episode.

Spears credits that with fueling at least part of the show's appeal.

"It's a fun place to be. Every kid would want to go to that school," she says.

"Zoey 101" creator Dan Schneider is just as quick to give credit to the show's likable and attractive cast of teenagers led by Spears and Flynn (grandson of Errol Flynn). They started out good, he says, and got better with every episode.

"I think Jamie Lynn really grew as an actress," says Schneider, who has produced such hit kid shows as "Drake & Josh" and "iCarly." "When she started, she was 13 and that's an awkward age. She got more confident in everything. But it really came through in her acting."

As the actors have grown, the show's plots have occasionally gotten less light and fluffy.

In one of the show's most-watched episodes, Chase has to deal with his grandmother's death.

After watching it with his wife, Schneider considered reshooting the ending in which a disconsolate Chase sits in the rain, his head on Zoey's shoulder. Schneider worried about traumatizing his young audience. But as it turned out, numerous parents contacted him to say their children have watched the show again and again in reruns.

Then there's this season's cliffhanger, in which generally smarmy rich kid Logan (Matthew Underwood) steps up as a loyal friend of both Chase and Zoey's.

"The show let me do a bunch of different things and they were really cool about always making it fun," says Spears. "We got to always dress different ways, and growing as an actress they gave me different situations. ... It helped a lot to do a lot of different things on camera."

Now she only has to figure out what to do with her life.

When she was 11 she talked about following her sister into music, but she's not so sure now.

"I don't know. You know?" she says of her future. "It's all kind of open to whatever I feel like doing, I guess. Or whatever comes my way. I guess it will all fall into place."
